Coastal Home Decor Must Haves

Coastal Home Decor Must Haves

So you’re wanting to include some coastal home décor to create your modern beach house but not sure how to do it? Coastal interiors have to be one of my favourite home design trends (I also happen to live in a very coastal area!). It is hard to go wrong with the coastal aesthetic but here are some basic way to incorporate some coastal home décor into your space without being ‘too much’.

The Colour Palette

When planning your coastal décor colour palette think light and bright. A common mistake people make when going for a coastal interiors is having absolutely everything white. While white is a big part of the coastal colour palette you will need to draw in some colour to make the space feel less clinical. Think sage green, light browns and light blues. If you are drawn to pops of navy in your coastal décor you might want to reconsider going for a nautical theme rather than coastal (yes, they are different).

Gold or Black Fixtures

While not strictly décor, adjusting fixtures where you are able to more of a gold or matte black finish screams coastal aesthetic. While the gold and black fixtures have copped some criticism in the past for scratching and fading easily, the increase in competition over recent years has meant there is a range of good quality gold fixtures (if you’re willing to pay the price!). These can be great ways to break up all the white as well.

Natural Textures

Incorporating natural textures into your space is a must when trying to master the coastal décor aesthetic. Think woven baskets, timbers, dried plants and leaves etc. Even trying to incorporate different textures among your furniture (such as linen or boucle) will help achieve that calming coastal design look.

Indoor Plants

This might be a controversial one when it comes to coastal décor. I am not a massive fan of large indoor plants when it comes to a coastal aesthetic however there are some plants that can help enhance the coastal look. Aim for smaller plants with lighter coloured leaves (closer to a sage green). This can help keep the colour palette for seamless while bring more natural elements into the home décor. Similarly, vines with lighter coloured leaves work really well with other coastal décor, particularly when woven around a display cabinet.

The Shell

I think one of the items most synonymous with coastal home décor has to be a shell of some sorts. Whether it’s a gold shell towel hook or a large white shell stacked perfectly on top of some coffee table books, it screams coastal. Now I am not opposed to either but what I will say is if you don’t want the coastal aesthetic to be too obvious or gauche, I would stick to just one and incorporate some of the more subtle ideas suggested above.
